Acupuncture Decreases Post-Surgical Pain

Acupuncture photoResearchers at Duke University Medical Center in North Carolina recently reviewed the results of 15 clinical trials on the effectiveness of acupuncture post surgery.  The trials showed that patients receiving acupuncture before or after different types of operations had significantly less pain afterward than patients who did not receive the acupuncture.  It also found the acupuncture group required less morphine and in turn, had reduced side effects like vomiting and nausea.

Pump up the Iron

Did you know that 7% of Canada's population (and upwards of 40% in some groups) is iron deficient?  Low iron is the most common nutrient deficiency, often leading to anemia.   How much do we need?
  • Young women - 12-13mg/day
  • Adult women - 13 mg/day
  • Pregnant women - 18-23 mg/day
  • Post menopause - 8 mg/day
  • Men - 9 mg/day
  • Children - 6-10 mg/day
There are two forms of dietary iron:  heme (animal foods) and non-heme (plants and eggs). Eggs are rich in iron and are a quick staple for breakfast, lunch or dinner.  Legumes like beans, lentils, chick peas and kidney peas can be added to soups to increase the nutritional value.  Try combining Vitamin C with a meal abundant with iron to increase your body's absorbency.  Floradix Iron Liquid is an excellent iron supplement made from natural iron sources and is often easier to digest than the iron found in most multi vitamins.

Meditation
Aware or not, everybody seeks to be lost in paradise - a peaceful, safe, welcoming environment.  Our incessant speed of modern life leaves us in dire need of relaxation from the stress and complexity that bombard us.  Meditation can take you to a state of thoughtless awareness.

If you are new to meditation, try this simple technique.  Find a comfortable place to lie with a light blanket.  Close your eyes and direct all of your thoughts to your breath.  With every inhalation think "inhalation"  and with every exhalation think "exhalation".  As soon as your mind strays, direct it back to these two simple thoughts.

Or try one of these Guided Meditation CD's.

Movember changes the face of men's health

November 1st marked the beginning of Movember (formerly known as November).  Men across Canada will grow a moustache (or Mo - Australian slang) for prostate research.  At the beginning of the month, men with a clean shaven face will start to grow their Mos. These Mo Bros - along with their Mo Sistas - will raise awareness and donations for the Prostate Cancer Research Foundation of Canada.

So far we have one Mo Bro amongst us.  Anyone else up for the challenge?  Click here to register, donate or get more information.
