Basically an open adoption refers to a situation where the adoptive family and birth mother (or parents) know each other and exchange information. The amount of information and contact can be very different depending on each situation and what the 2 families have agreed to. Some birth mothers have visits with the adopted child, some prefer written/photo updates from the adoptive parents occasionally and some have no contact once the adoption is final.

Once you've adopted a baby can the birth mother take him/her away from you if they have changed their mind. And at anytime down the road?

I'm pretty sure there is a time limit. I don't know what it is for sure, but I'm guessing it's about 10-14days. After that the adoption is final and the birth parent(s) can't change their mind.

The birth mother legally has 10 days to change her mind.
